Theme:  Decorate Holiday Tree for DAR Festival of Lights

Goal:  Decorate Tree in the Pre decided Topic of Comic Book Heros.  Deliver Tree to DAR on Schedule.  Each student will make at least one ornament for the tree and one to take home.

Materials:  Fabric in Comic Book Hero theme, used for tree skirt and to cover wooden ornament shapes.  Matching ribbon for bows, empty glass ornaments to fill.  Comic Hero stickers, mini figures, tree topper to be colored, glitter, glue, sequins, and various notions to embellish and create ornaments.  Scissors, markers, paint and yarn/strings.  Camera for photos.  Snacks for participants.

Attendance:  Eleven Students and 1 instructor.

  • Theme: Make No-bake cookies while planning and brain storming themes for this years DAR Christmas Tree.
  • Goal of Session or Activity:  Every student will dabble in No bake confections, take some edibles home, learn some basic kitchen skills, we have a theme for our tree(s).
  • Books and/or Materials featured  Receipe for No bake cookies, (see below)  Receipe for Rice Crispy treats found on the slide of the box.  All listed ingrediants.  Large tablet and markers to record suggestions and voting.
  • Number Attending:  Ten students and one instructor.
  • Two themes chosen:  Edible Ornament tree and Comic Book Heros.

    No-Bake Chocolate Cookies by Sarah Sprock

    • 4 cups sugar
    • 6 tablespoons cocoa
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1/2 lb oleo (margerine or butter)
    • 1 1/2 cups peanut butter
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 7 cups quick oats

    Bring to a good boil sugar, cocoa, milk and oleo. remove from heat. Add peanut butter, vanilla and quick oats. Drop by teaspoons onto waxed paper.

    • Art:  Class Project.  Three way figural flip book.
    • Goal of Session or Activity:  Each student will create a figural drawing that divides into 3 sections.  The common demarcations will be the neck and the waistline.  Sheets were prepared by instructor before class.  Each sheet is divided into 3 sections and the marks for the common neck and waist were added.  Once the drawing is complete the sheets will be cut into 3 sections and fastened in order in book fashion.  Multiple combinations of figures will be possible with the resulting flip book.  Each student will get a small copy of the flip book with a larger copy being put in the library.  Original art will be returned to the students.  Figures should be brightly colored and well defined.  All backgrounds will be left white to provide a common ground.
    • NOTE: Also at this class we will take photos of students in poses for flying in preparation for next project.
    • Books and/or Materials featured: White paper that is pre-marked and measured before class.  Pencils, colored pencils and Markers.  Project will be scanned, printed professionally and spiral bound.
    • Number Attending :  15 students attending.

    • Theme:  Art/ Mosaics
    • Goal of Session or Activity:  Each student will complete one or more mosaic plaque and decorated frame.
    • Books and/or Materials featured: unfinished wooden frames, assortment of tiles, glass, buttons, paint, brushes rubber stamps and Elmer’s brand glue.
    • Number Attending : Eight Students and one instructor.

    Theme:  Time Capsule

    Goal of Session and/or Activity:  Students will create a time capsule filled with items that they think are significant representations of what is happening at this moment in time.  These will include news items and personal items.  Students will be encouraged to make predictions about events that might transpire between now and the time that the time capsule will be reopened.  A reopen time will be set and student info will be taken down so that invitations can be sent out to all who have participated.  The time frame will probably be short term, 6-9 months.  The time capsule will be buried just outside the library.  Additional containers will be provided for personal time capsules that students can make to bury at home and set their own reopen date. 

    Books and /or materials featured:  Air and water tight containers large enough to accomodate desired items for archiving.  Collection of items to be archived for future examination.  Evelopes for personal predictions and messages.  Personal time capsules for home use.  A shovel for burying the completed time capsule.

    Number Attending:  Ten students and 1 instructor.

    Theme: Mini Diaramas

    Goal of Session and/or Activity:

    The students were given a cigar  box and asked to create a scene from a supply of materials described below.  The students will then be asked to create titles and a short description of what is happening in the diorama in a future writing class.  Photos were taken with a digital camera of finish items.  Photos were then cropped to enhance focal points.

    This is a collage of eight dioramas.  The themes varied from imitation of nature to the surreal.

    Books and/or Materials included:  cigar boxes, scenic calandars and magazines, scrap booking papers, novelty buttons, plastic figures of various themes, air drying clay, Elmer’s glue, hot glue gun, glitter, dried plant mater, various sands and gravels for model railroad scenery, paint, encouragement, a digital camera and a hour’s worth of imagination. 

    Number Attending:   Eight Students.

    Theme:  Effigies, Poppets, Pincushions and voodoo dolls.

    Positive Voodoo Doll

    Goal of Session or Activity:  Students will create Voodoo dolls or poppets to represent New Year resolutions that they hope to achieve.  Instructor will show examples of Voodoo dolls, Effigies, Worry Dolls, Worry ponies, and amulets from around the world that are used to help people visualize goals.  The emphasis will be on positive change.  An alternative activity will be creating a pincushion, or Ojo de Dios decoration.  Students will begin class by privately writing down New Years goals that they have chosen for their self.  These goals will be folded and pinned to effigy as a reminder to help keep focused on the goal as time passes.  The therapeutic value of goal visualization will be explored as will be cultural variations on the theme.  Religious and philosophical beliefs and values will not be explored in this exercise which is purely artistic in nature.

    Books and /or materials featured: Yarns, Fabrics, dowels and pipe cleaners for armatures.  Ginger bread boy cut outs that can be used as a base.  Clay, beads and embellishments.  Examples of Voodoo Dolls, Worry dolls, Milagros, Poppets and amulets from Instructors collection were examined and discussed.
